Special Needs Dentistry
We welcome children with special healthcare needs, including children with autism and sensory sensitivities. Our approach recognizes that becoming comfortable with dental visits can take time.
Building Comfort Takes Time
For some children with autism, sensory sensitivities, or other special healthcare needs, the first dental visit may be difficult—and that is okay. A new office, unfamiliar people, sounds, lights, smells, and dental equipment can be a lot to take in at once.
We encourage families not to become discouraged after a difficult first visit. Many children become more comfortable as they return to our office and become familiar with the surroundings and our staff. Each visit gives your child another opportunity to learn what to expect and build familiarity with the dental environment.
Our team works to accomplish what we safely can during each appointment while keeping the visit as efficient and comfortable as possible for your child. We don't want to unnecessarily prolong a stressful experience. As your child becomes more familiar with our office and team, future visits may become easier and more productive.
Parents & Caregivers Are an Important Part of the Process
You know your child better than anyone. We encourage you to tell us about sensory sensitivities, behaviors or situations that may cause distress, and things that help your child feel more comfortable.
Please call our office at 765-453-2267.
Success May Look Different for Every Child
For one child, a successful visit may include completing an examination and cleaning. For another, especially during the first few visits, success may simply mean becoming more comfortable with the dental environment and allowing us to accomplish a little more than we could previously.
