Operative Dentistry

When your child needs dental treatment, there isn't one approach that is right for every patient. Our doctors consider the child's age, treatment needs, ability to tolerate dental procedures, and safety when determining how operative care should be completed.

Finding the Right Approach for Your Child

At Pediatric Dental Specialists of Indiana, P.C., Dr. Matthew Pate or Dr. Robert Long will determine which treatment options are appropriate for your child. They will discuss those options with you so you understand how your child's dental treatment can be completed safely and effectively.

Depending on your child's individual needs and the amount of dental treatment required, our doctors may recommend one of three approaches.

OPTION 1

Nitrous Oxide — “Happy Gas”

Nitrous oxide, often called “happy gas,” can be used during operative dental treatment to help children feel more relaxed and comfortable.

The child remains awake during treatment and is able to communicate with our dental team. Nitrous oxide may be an option for children who are able to cooperate with treatment but would benefit from some additional help relaxing during the procedure.

OPTION 2

Sedation Dentistry

For younger or more anxious children, nitrous oxide alone may not provide enough assistance to safely and effectively complete the dental treatment they need.

For appropriate patients, our doctors may recommend a lighter form of sedation to help the child tolerate operative dental treatment.

Sedation is not automatically recommended simply because a child is nervous. Dr. Pate or Dr. Long will evaluate the child and the treatment that needs to be completed before determining whether sedation is an appropriate option.

OPTION 3

General Anesthesia

When a child requires extensive dental treatment, completing that amount of care during traditional office visits may not always be the appropriate approach.

For certain patients, Dr. Pate or Dr. Long may recommend completing dental treatment under general anesthesia.

General anesthesia allows extensive dental treatment to be completed while the child is asleep. Whether this is an appropriate treatment option is determined by the doctor after evaluating the child's individual circumstances and dental needs.

You Don't Have to Choose an Option on Your Own

Parents sometimes have questions about which approach will be best for their child. Dr. Pate or Dr. Long will evaluate your child's dental needs and determine which treatment options are appropriate. The doctor will discuss those options with you and answer your questions before treatment is scheduled.
